For Kurt Beate, Tapir Lodge was never simply a lodge in the jungle; it is his life’s project. Founded in the late 1990s with a clear and unwavering purpose, it was conceived as a sanctuary in complete harmony with the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve — where travelers are not merely distant visitors, but guests welcomed into the living Amazon with authenticity and deep respect.
From the very beginning, Kurt knew the rainforest could not be protected alone. Tapir Lodge was built hand-in-hand in alliance with families of the local Siona indigenous community. We share ecotourism activities, ancestral knowledge, and economic benefits, ensuring that conscious travel empowers those who call this forest home.
Believing that the true comfort of the Amazon is its undisturbed peace, Kurt committed to authentic sustainability: we became one of the first lodges to operate 100% on clean solar energy, paired with ecological composting toilets. There is no roar or smell of diesel generators; here the Cuyabeno river and nocturnal wildlife reign day and night.
Instead of clearing land for conventional cabins scattered on the jungle floor, Kurt conceived an innovative architectural design: two 15-meter wooden towers rising into the forest canopy. This design reduces ground impact to an absolute minimum while granting guests a magical perspective among the treetops and waterways.
